Orchidée de Rothschild — detail

The golden slipper

Discovered in Borneo and known from only a handful of sites on the flanks of Kinabalu, this orchid spreads two horizontal striped petals that can span thirty centimetres.

It often takes more than a decade to send up its first spike, which explains both its price and the poaching pressure that has made it one of the most closely watched orchids in the world.

"The Rothschild Orchid charges ten years of patience for a single spike."
01

Styling Tip 01

Soft light

Diffuse brightness and never a direct ray: a sheer curtain or an east-to-north exposure suits it perfectly.

02

Styling Tip 02

Free-draining mix

Water with soft water as soon as the mix begins to dry, never letting it stay soaked or go bone dry.

03

Styling Tip 03

Humidity and dilute feed

Aim for 60–80 % humidity and a quarter-strength orchid feed twice a month during active growth.
