Népenthès Rajah — detail

The pitcher of Kinabalu

Confined to the ultramafic slopes of Mount Kinabalu in Borneo, this carnivorous plant produces the largest pitchers of its genus, able to hold more than three litres of digestive fluid.

Its purple pitchers trap insects and small vertebrates, while a local tree shrew uses them as a perch — an exchange that yields the nitrogen its poor soil withholds.

"The Rajah Pitcher Plant does not beg for its food: it receives it."
01

Styling Tip 01

Bright filtered light

Plenty of brightness without scorching sun: behind a sheer curtain or under a grow light, never in full southern exposure.

02

Styling Tip 02

Soft water only

Water with rainwater or distilled water and keep the medium constantly moist; lime is fatal to it.

03

Styling Tip 03

Cool nights

A highland species: give it nights around 15 °C and never fertilise the growing medium.
