Flamboyant d'Australie — detail

Bare, the better to flower

Native to the subtropical forests of Australia's east coast, it stores reserves in a swollen trunk, distantly in the manner of a baobab.

Before flowering it defoliates completely: with no leaf to distract the eye, the red bloom becomes total and visible hundreds of metres away. Some years it flowers on a single branch only.

"It takes off its leaves so only the flowers are seen."

Styling Tip 01

Patience before the first bloom

It often takes six to eight years to flower heavily for the first time: that's normal, don't prune to force it.

02

Styling Tip 02

Heat and drainage

Full sun, deep free-draining soil; it fears wet winters more than dry cold.

03

Styling Tip 03

Keep roots at a distance

The trunk broadens considerably with age: leave three metres between it and any structure.
