The plain that named the race
It grows wild all around the Mediterranean, on wasteland and roadsides, where its tall yellow outline is recognisable from a distance.
In ancient Greek the plant is called marathon: the plain where the battle was fought was covered in it, and it is from that field of fennel that the race indirectly takes its name.
