The wild species, native to the eastern Mediterranean, has a spreading outline. The narrow spindle everyone knows is a selected form, propagated since antiquity.
It was planted to mark property boundaries, shelter crops from wind and signal cemeteries; its rot-resistant timber went into chests and roof beams.
