Bare, the better to flower
Native to the subtropical forests of Australia's east coast, it stores reserves in a swollen trunk, distantly in the manner of a baobab.
Before flowering it defoliates completely: with no leaf to distract the eye, the red bloom becomes total and visible hundreds of metres away. Some years it flowers on a single branch only.
