The edible sculpture of the plot
Descended from the wild Mediterranean cardoon, the Artichoke has been grown since antiquity in North Africa, where it holds pride of place in tagines and spring dishes.
A perennial, it produces for several years and is propagated by offsets taken at the base, allowing the planting to be renewed without sowing.
"The artichoke is a flower picked before it opens."
Styling Tip 01
Full Sun
A sunny position and deep soil guarantee large, tender heads.
Styling Tip 02
Regular Watering
Water regularly while the heads form; drought makes them small and tough.
Styling Tip 03
Divide the Clumps
Take offsets in spring every three years to rejuvenate the planting.
